DANEMO Excursion 2026
AI in Life Science: Data, Discovery, and Collaboration at EMBL Heidelberg
Would you like to experience how artificial intelligence and big data are transforming the life sciences? Meet researchers developing new computational and experimental models to understand complex biological systems? Build connections with peers across Denmark and internationally?
This year’s DANEMO excursion to the EMBL Heidelberg will focus on the growing role of AI, data science, and digital infrastructure in modern biological research. From image analysis and large-scale biological datasets to predictive modelling and data stewardship, new tools are reshaping how scientific questions are asked and answered. At the same time, these advances require researchers who can work across disciplines and navigate increasingly complex research environments.
The purpose of this excursion is to introduce participants to cutting-edge research and infrastructure at EMBL Heidelberg, and to showcase how interdisciplinary approaches combining biology, computation, and data science are driving discovery. Participants will hear from leading scientists and technology specialists working at the interface of life science and digital innovation, and gain insight into the practical realities of working in an international research environment.
Over two days of group leader presentations, seminars, and facility visits, participants will explore the world-renowned research infrastructure located at EMBL Heidelberg, including advanced imaging and data analysis platforms. The programme will also include networking activities designed to connect Danish students and early-career researchers with scientists based at EMBL, providing opportunities to discuss research paths, collaboration possibilities, and international career trajectories. Participants will also take part in a poster session and will be asked to bring a research poster presenting their current work.
A key goal of the excursion is to strengthen connections between Danish universities and EMBL while inspiring the next generation of researchers to engage with international research environments. Master’s students are particularly encouraged to apply, as the visit offers a valuable opportunity to learn more about research training pathways such as the EMBL International PhD Programme and to build early connections within the EMBL community.
The excursion is open to Master’s students, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers based at Danish research institutions who are interested in the future of life science research, including the role of AI and data-driven approaches.
There is no registration fee, and accommodation will be provided. In addition, participants will receive a 3,000 DKK travel stipend to help cover transportation costs to Heidelberg. Capacity is strictly limited to 20 participants.
PhD students will be eligible to receive 1 ECTS credit for participation in the excursion.
The excursion is being jointly organised by DANEMO, the Technical University of Denmark, and EMBL Heidelberg.
